For the first episode of 2021, we welcome Closet Yi to our mixtape series. Based in South Korea’s capital of Seoul, the producer has making moves on the DJ circuit for a few years now, so we’re looking forward to hearing about the mix & what she’s been up to recently…
Apart from making dj mixes and listening again to Resident Advisor’s 2020’s Best Albums, I’ve been really into practicing my driving skills recently. I never had the time or will to drive when I used to have gigs and parties, but I thought this is the perfect time to practice my skills. It’s challenging but I’m having a lot of fun.
The mix was recorded at my little studio in Seoul, South Korea. It’s quite hard to get a noise-complaint-free room here in Seoul, but me and my studio mate Jesse You were lucky enough to find this place because it has a motorcycle shop on the first floor, which is even louder! I went through quite a lot of my hard drive and shelves because I wanted to take a look at what music I’ve bought through the past year. An hour seemed a bit short for all the tracks that I wanted to put in as a ‘byebye2020 hello 2021’ mix so I ended up mixing 27 tracks for 90mins.
I wanted to feature a lot of female producers that I look up to this time, especially rRoxymore and India Jordan, and tried to deliver it in a cheerful and catchy way. Each of the tracks are so good, but there’s also an energy flow in the mix as a whole so I hope the listeners can feel it too.
More driving lessons and some exciting new releases following that!
